Zaatar Mediterranean Spice Mixes

Your Home of The Traditional Mediterranean Spice Mix… Za’atar

Since ancient times, people in the Middle East have used za’atar to introduce essential oils into their diet. In the Levant, there is a belief that za’atar makes the mind alert and the body strong. For this reason, children are encouraged to eat a za’atar sandwich for breakfast before an exam or before school. Since ancient times, people in the Middle East have used za’atar to reduce and eliminate internal parasites. Za’atar uses large quantities of Thyme (Thymus serpyllum) which contains phenolic and antiseptic compounds including the essential oil and anthelminticthymol

What is Za’atar?

Za’atar is a harmony of herb, sesame seed and sumac. The herb component can be thyme, oregano, marjoram or a combination of the three; recipes vary throughout the Middle East depending on region and availability. Za’atar, translated from Arabic, refers to this collection of herbs, Origanum, but it has also come to mean the spice blend, similarly to how chili powder here is both the powdered chili and a mix of dried chiles, cumin and oregano. Our product is not an ordinary Zaatar spice. Our Spice is Vegan and includes roasted garlic spices. Our customers crave this addicting flavor.

When the dried herb is moistened with olive oil, the spread is known as za’atar-wu-zayt or zeit ou za’atar. This mixture is spread on dough and baked as a bread, making manakeesh bi za’atar. In the Middle East, ka’ak, a soft sesame seed bread, known as ka’akh in Hebrew and is sold in bakeries and shops all over

It is also eaten with labneh (yogurt drained to make a tangy, creamy cheese), and bread and olive oil for breakfast, most commonly in Jordan, Palestine, Israel, Syria, and Lebanon, as well as other places in the Arab world. The Lebanese specialty shanklish, dry-cured balls of labneh, can be rolled in za’atar to form its coating

Your particular zaatar blend is similar to the type we ate frequently while we lived in Arabia. But the truth is that yours actually tastes better that the zaatar we used to get in Arabia. Me and my wife are so happy we found your site so we can continue to eat one of our favorite foods– zaatar pizza.

After reading much about Za’atar blends, I decided to give this one a try. I love love love this seasoning and find (like seemingly everyone else out there) that it adds interest and zip to simple dishes: grilled/roasted vegetables, cooked beans, soups, salads, even a simple bagel with cream cheese! It’s like a seasoning salt only way more interesting and without the salt. Great stuff.

I had never used Za’atar previously but read about it. It’s a blend of mostly Middle Easter seasonings and is great on chicken, lamb, and beef as well as blended in soups, salad dressing and hummus. It’s a very good all around seasoning for most everything.
